Chapter 7

Clay and the others rode in past noon, with the sun sitting high above the red tailed hawk, still doing its slow, methodical swirls. Jesse watched from a distance as the men unpacked their supplies. Wilhelm, wearing a long rust-colored coat, carefully set down coils of rope in neat piles near the stand of trees. Butch, who was dressed head-to-toe in dusty brown leather, carried a coiled bullwhip at his side and hefted two ponderous bags that sounded like horse shoes. And Clay, with a slate gray hat low on his brow, set out an array of items on an old, wooden table before taking his gun out for a cleaning.

After a moment, he looked up and jerked his head to the side, motioning for Jesse to join him.

"How'd you sleep?" Clay asked offhandedly.

Jesse grunted as he approached. He looked down at the table. Part of him wanted to lay into Clay about leaving him with the old mismarked crates in the shed. He'd taken a look at them after returning from the lesson with Charlie, and the old doctor was right. The sturdy boxes held only foodstuff and other supplies. So again, it was some kind of petty humor among thieves. A language he didn't speak, which only served to leave him standing there, gawking awkwardly like the outsider he was.

I don't appreciate you thinking you're funny, he wanted to growl at Clay. But rather than indulge his raised hackles, he merely shrugged.

"Better n' most."

Jesse picked up a grappling hook from the table and turned it in his hand. "What are you up to? You wouldn't use this on a stage coach."

"Nope." Clay remained focused on his gun, polishing the metal with a rag.

Jesse frowned. Not that he expected Clay to be forthcoming about anything, but after the conversation last night, he'd thought maybe… He tried again.

"What are you planning?"

"You won't like it." Clay looked up with a grin plastered on his lips. "You're all high n' mighty for simple robbery much less what we aim to do. It's better if you don't know."

"I already don't like it." Jesse rubbed his tight jaw. "And I don't like seeing good people get hurt."

"Don't you remember what I said?"

Jesse tipped his hat back and squinted. Of course, he remembered everything Clay had said clear as day. More than that, he remembered everything Clay had done. And now the whole mess just made his head hurt. Besides that, he was getting tired of the smug tone in the man's voice.

"That was before I heard you were a murderer."

Clay blinked and his eyes searched Jesse's face for a moment. "You still going on about that? I thought we were done with that nonsense."

"You never gave me a straight answer one way or the other."

"You said you trusted me." Clay dropped his gaze back to cleaning his gun.

Jesse turned his back and kicked at the dirt. "Trust goes both ways. Why don't you tell me what you're planning to do?"

The leaves rustled in a light breeze and a lone bird chirped somewhere in the branches overhead.
